We were first introduced to John Rambo in First Blood. He was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 17 and was deployed to South Vietnam. He returned to the U.S. and began training for the Green Berets and was re-deployed to Vietnam. He was captured by the North Vietnamese forces and held as a POW and was repeatedly tortured. Rambo escaped captivity in May 1972, but upon returning to the U.S., he discovers that many American Civilians hated the returning soldiers. His experiences in Vietnam and the humiliation from anti-war “hippies” results in an extreme case of post-traumatic stress disorder. The inner questions of self identity and reflectiveness is the where First Blood picks up, with our protagonist as a homeless drifter.
